This year the National Youth team will not be participating. Due to the fact that after the tryouts several players were selected in key positions, but they choose to decline the offer to participate. The fact that we did not have a lot of depth during the tryout process at the middle and outside positions it hurt in the development of the team. I am unhappy about making this announcement. I truly appreciate all those that tried out and wish you the best during the summer.

Wear what you would wear at practice: knee pads, volleyball shoes, quality socks, we will give you a practice shirt with a number.

  1. Bring a water bottle, if you normally wear ankle or knee braces wear them.
  2. Bring a great attitude and the desire to work very hard to impress coaches with your talent and skills.

What will the tryouts be like:

  1. You will be tested for vertical jump
  2. Your passing and digging skills will be evaluated
  3. Your hitting and blocking skills will be evaluated
  4. Your serving and quickness will be evaluated

COACHING STAFF:

Julie Allen Amy Gandy
Julie Allen, Select Coach Amy Gandy, Youth Coach
Ast. Coach UTEP Ast. Coach Texas Tech

Julie Allen:
Julie enters her third season as an assistant coach to the Miners' volleyball program. Allen's main responsibilities include working with the setters, scouting and assisting with recruiting. In 2010, true freshman, Malia Patterson won the starting position midseason. Under Allen's guidance, Patterson posted seven contests with 25 or more assists including a career-best 58 in her first full match in the Orange and Blue. Patterson had three matches with double-digit digs for three double-double performances.

Patterson carried her success into 2011 having registered 12 double-double performances and posted 25 matches with 30 or more assists. Under Allen, Patterson has gone from averaging 8.38 assists/set to registering 10.3 per frame in 2011. Patterson recorded a career-high 63 assists against Houston (10/30) during her second season with the Miners.

Under Allen's tutelage, the Miners have excelled in the assists category. UTEP has gone from averaging 10.90 in 2010 to 12.2 in 2011.

The Sebastopol, Calif., native joined the UTEP volleyball staff after a two-year stint at Arkansas State. While at Arkansas State, Allen helped direct the Red Wolves to back-to-back winning seasons, 22-11 in 2009 and 21-12 in 2008.

Prior to Arkansas State, Allen spent two years as an assistant coach at Georgetown where she handled scouting, off season recruiting and team development. While at Arkansas State, Allen tutored Cayla Fielder, the 2008 Sun Belt Freshman of the Year, and the Defensive Player of the Week Heather Brown.

She began her collegiate coaching career at Chico State where she assisted with the recruiting, travel and summer camps while leading the men's club team to a fifth-place finish at the national tournament.

Allen is a 2005 graduate of the NCAA Women's Coaches Academy, a program that provides skills training for coaches at all levels to assist them in being more efficient, productive, resourceful and successful. She also participated in the NCAA Women Coaches Academy Dimension 2 in 2007.

Allen received her bachelor's degree in education with a concentration in social studies from the University of Portland where she was a four-year setter for the Pilots. She ranks fifth all-time in Pilots' history in career assists with 2,042.

Following graduation, Allen served as head coach at Tualatin High School and brings club experience after working with the Empire Volleyball Club in Santa Rosa, Calif.

AMY GANDY:
Former Texas Tech standout Amy Gandy enters her fourth season in 2012 on the Red Raider bench as the program's director of volleyball operations.

Gandy, who joined the staff during the 2009 season, handles the business functions for the program, including team travel and various day-to-day aspects. She is also actively involved in the club volleyball scene throughout the Lubbock area, helping organize club coaches and assisting with the operations of the growing program.

One of the top middle blockers in Tech history, Gandy finished the 2010 season as an assistant coach under then-interim head coach Beth Falls. Over the final nine matches, the Red Raiders showed improvement under the duo, breaking a four-year road conference losing streak and winning more sets than a Tech team had done in conference since 2007.

As a player, Gandy finished her career as one of just eight Tech players to record 1,000 career kills, while posting 367 total blocks, sixth best on the school's all-time chart. She is also one four Tech players to finish a career with over 300-plus block assists.

Gandy, known primarily as Amy Charlebois during her playing career from 2004-07, graduated from Texas Tech in 2007 with a degree in mathematics.

HP Select Head Coach: Jojit Coronel

Jojit Coronel

Having an opportunity to add Jojit Coronel to the new Texas Tech staff is phenomenal," Flora said. "Jojit brings a wealth of coaching skills that will help the athletes, the staff as well as the entire program. He is also a consument professional. He will walk the walk every day and will help raise our national profile here at Texas Tech."

After a year as an assistant coach with the program, Coronel was elevated to GW's head coach in August 2000 and immediately found success in only his first season. The Colonials finished 25-6, winning the Atlantic-10 Championship to advance to the NCAA Championship, earning Coronel the A-10 Coach of the Year award as well as a selection as one of the regional coaches of the year by the AVCA.

Coronel (pronounced Joe-jit Core-nel) wrapped his 11-year career at George Washington with a 176-153 coaching mark, highlighted by six trips to the A-10 Championship and three 20-plus wins seasons.

Prior to joining George Washington, Coronel spent four seasons as the assistant coach for the men's volleyball program at the University of the Pacific, one of the top collegiate men's programs in the country.

Throughout his career, Coronel has been heavily involved with the USA national program, most recently leading the USA/Chesapeake Region High Performance teams. He has also served numerous stints as a volunteer coach and various internships, working with both the 2001 and 2003 USA men's national teams. He assisted and trained with the 2001 team that won the gold medal at the USA World University Games as well as the potential 2004 Athens Olympic team.

Coronel graduated in 1993 from the University of California, Santa Cruz, with a degree in political science. He was a standout member of UCSC's volleyball team as both a setter and defensive specialist, leading the squad to a 74-42 record over four years and Pacific Coast Volleyball Association titles in 1989 and 1991.

Following his graduation, he served as the head coach for the men's program from 1993-95. During that time, he was involved with several junior club programs, including Team Santa Cruz, Nike Pacific Volleyball Club and DC Juniors.

A Los Angeles native, Coronel and his wife, Kimberly, have two sons, Ethan and Drew.

An Ontario, Canada native, Gandy and her husband, Eric, reside in Lubbock.

2011 Results

Sun Country captures 1st place in Pool C.

For the first time since Sun Country has been sending teams to the USA High Performance Championships a team from the Sun Country Region has gone undefeated. The volleyball team that has members from New Mexico and Texas proved they had what it takes to play against some of the best players in the country. It is quite a feat to do well at a tournament where other regions are sending their best players. Then to get to the tournament and win the 6 team pool is really something. Even the 2007 team that captured the gold medal did not do this well. It says a lot about the quality of our players and coaching staff. In the end, the 15th seeded Sun Country Region finished 8th out of the 24 teams that participated in the Select division. To view the results see below.

Day 1 Sun Country v Carolina Sel 3-1 1-0
