What is Sun Country High Performance? 

The simple explanation: a group of very good volleyball players that tryout for a team based on their age, an all-star team of sorts.  This team represents the Sun Country Region.  They train for 4 to 5 days at a location that changes from year to year.  Past training sites have been at Texas Tech, New Mexico State, and University of Texas El Paso universities.  From training camp the team goes directly to the competition venue.  Past venues have been located in Park City, Utah; Austin, Texas; Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and this year Tucson, Arizona. 

In past years, our region has sent either one or two teams.  This year we are planning on sending only a Select team.  The age for the Select Team is for those athletes that were born in 1994 or earlier.  The team will consist of 12 travel players and training camp may include up to 12 additional camp players. 

How is one selected?

Tryouts are usually the evening prior to a region tournament.  Locations of tryouts are in: Lubbock, Midland, Amarillo, El Paso/Las Cruces and the Friday before the Region Championships.

What is the cost?  

The costs vary based on the location of the tournament site and the size of the travel roster.  In general, the cost is under $850.  This does not include transportation to training camp or to the tournament site. Ground transportation is included in that figure.  This year the cost should be under $800 because the location to Tucson is a relatively short distance compared to past locations. 

Who are the coaches?

Much of our success has been because of the generosity of our region college coaches.  Past coaches have come from colleges such as: New Mexico State University, College of the Southwest, University of Texas El Paso, Texas Tech University and several of our past assistant coaches have gone on to coach at University of Texas Corpus Christi, Texas A & M International in Laredo.  Many of the teams have had assistance with many of our successful club directors and coaches from Albuquerque, Las Cruces, El Paso, Amarillo, Lubbock and other cities.  This year’s head coach comes from New Mexico State University, Stevi Adams and our assistant coach is the club director from Amarillo Elite, Jess Evers.  Many of the additional coaches helping at training camp will come from the El Paso/Las Cruces area.

When is the team selected?

Selection of the 2008 team will be made toward the end of May.  Players will be contacted and after the team is selected it will be posted on the Sun Country web site.
